FACE collaborates with COPAO to celebrate Rizal Day on December 30, 2007.
Fil-Am community celebrates Rizal Day

National City - On a bright and chilly Sunday morning, the Filipino community
celebrated Rizal Day commemorating the death of a great Filipino. One hundred eleven
years ago on Dec. 30, 1896, Dr. Jose Rizal was executed by a firing squad in
Bagumbayan, now renamed in his honor - Rizal Park which is in Manila. Rizal was shot
on orders of Spanish authorities for inspiring an oppressed nation to eventually break
free of the shackles of Spanish domination.
The day-long celebration began in front of the Seafood City Superstore in this city
where the Rizal monument is located, with floral offerings from Rita Andrews, president
of the Council for PhilippineAmerican Organizations (COPAO) and Dr. Riz Oades,
president and founder of the Kalusugan Community Services (KCS) and Wellness
Center. They were joined by members of the 2007 Philippine Faire Royal Court:
Crispina Cervantes, Layla Ali, Jennifer Corpuz, and Maricel Lopez. Also present were
FilAm community leaders, COPAO officials and members of the Coalition of Filipino
Veterans in San Diego epresented by Bert Andrade and Atty. Manuel Cannu. The
solemn commemoration was highlighted by the participation of the 182nd Airborne
